I take a different view the of issue. Despite the ugliness of Buchanan's tone, he does speak to what has been the unspoken social "elephant in the room"; the fear of the lost of white hegemony. His voice is bigoted and regressive, but it does speak to a topic that has animated every thing from immigration, to social policy as well as the rabid right's opposition to our current president as represented by many in the birther and tea party movement. To make Pat go away may have some symbolic value, but he speaks for many and I'd rather "tolerate" his voice in the name of free speech, rather than give his bigoted followers a martyr.

As I've gotten older (44 now) I grown less willing to indure processes that require prolong emotional stress. This includes watching melodramatic TV movies with predictable endings, sporting events where I have a rooting interest. (Sorry Tiger Woods, and Dallas Cowboys) and especially election night political coverage. My reasoning is that if I invest less of my conscious thought, the disappointment will be less, when the ending doesn't go my way. So going into last nights coverage, I adroitly avoided the cable newsies and did hop-scotch through the other channels until curiosity got the better of me .(Hey, I got through half an hour on National Geographic and 40 minutes uf "The Wire" Episode 45) When I made my way to MSNBC
Keith and Tweety were talking up a paradigm shift, now that's what I'm talkin' about. I was' in the house'.........Hours later, a new House and leaning towards a new Senate, I forced myself to sleep.

The story did not name the companies.

Since the Times disclosed the domestic spying program last week, President Bush has stressed that his executive order allowing the eavesdropping was limited to people with known links to al-Qaida.
But the Times said that NSA technicians have combed through large volumes of phone and Internet traffic in search of patterns that might lead to terrorists.
The volume of information harvested from telecommunications data and voice networks, without court-approved warrants, is much larger than the White House has acknowledged, the paper said, quoting an unnamed official.
The story quoted a former technology manager at a major telecommunications firm as saying that companies have been storing information on calling patterns since the Sept. 11 attacks, and giving it to the federal government. Neither the manager nor the company he worked for was identified.

Whenever there is a cataclysmic event such a terrorist attack, natural disaster, or a breast exposed at a Superbowl halftime show , it is the 'job' of the national media to take the pulse of the nation and exploit..err explain any chasm that exist along our social fault lines. And nothing gets the juices going and revs up the demons that lie below, quite like inner city looting footage. With waters rising and and unrescued victims clinging to their last breaths, the cable newsers and level headed talk radio righties decided to shift the focus. Instead of concentrating on the nascent relief efforts , the Ritas and Tuckers of the world thought the best use of their tele-journalism allotment would be the ad nauseum looping of the Wal-Mart looting footage. Instead of spurring the Feds to come in and secure New Orleans, partisan yackers were debating whether ordinary citizens should be allowed the 'shoot to kill' option if confronted by suspect dark denizens of the welfare state. This tact had the effect however of suspending the national resolve, and creating the subliminal question as to whether or not the citizens of the Big Easy actually deserved prompt rescuing. Sure New Orleans is a great party town, but don't Alabama and Mississippi have Republican governors. This delay to many, may eventually prove as fatal as the storm proper, when the (pardon me) post mortem of Katrina is written.

I was very torn when the news came about the Schiavo case Friday. It's very difficult to fathom the burden of choosing to take away the feeding tube of a person who appears conscious and responding to some type of stimulus. But the nature of involuntary motor fucntions, must have been taken into account. In a state like Florida, I'm sure the medical staff has come under a lot of pressure to find excuses not to let this happen, but after a decade and a half struggle, here we are. Mr Schiavo has the legal right to do this.(Yes even over the objections of her parents and siblings, or don't the conservative still believe in the primacy of the marital bond ) And this type of situation has been ajudicated and settled, remember Karen Ann Quinlan. That's why I believe the husband when his says , that he had talked about this type of situation with his wife. I'm a year older than Mrs. Schiavo, and I remember the Quinlan case while in Jr. High and it made an impression on me and I'm sure on a lot of kids of that time, so it's quite conceivable that this would be a topic of discussion for a young couple of that age. Now if you asked me what I would have done in a similar situation, if I were predisposed to let my wife go and her parents wanted to let her remain on some form of life support. I would probably have left the decision to her parents. But that would have been my decision, Michael Schiavo has a right to his.
And a totally cynical after thought. How discusting is it that on this polarizing wretching issue the Republican decide that the moral calvary would be led by the most ethically challenged Republican in Congress? Does this sit well that the Exterminator,(Irony abounds) would use THIS to rehabilitate his image ? Yuck !

During SecState Condi Rice's appearance on Meet the Press yesterday, she made an interesting statement.
DR. RICE: Our view of Hezbollah has not changed, that it is, indeed, a terrorist organization. We're concentrating, Tim, on trying to remove the artificial element in Lebanese politics at this point and that is Syrian troops and the Syrian security forces, intelligence services. Once that is done, the Lebanese will be able to have a political process that is free of that kind of foreign interference, a political process that will begin to develop and we will be able to see or they will be able to see what the real balance of forces looks like in Lebanon. But as long as you have an overwhelming security and troop presence there for the Syrians, it is not possible for them to do that work.
So...the presence of a foreign occupying military force is considered an interference to the legitimate political proccess in certain Middle Eastern countries.
Oh well.

I'm not a celebrity role model hawker, but this is sad. My kids love the Cosby show reruns on Nick at Night and soon word of the Bill Cosby allegations will filter into their world. Never a good time for these type of allegations to surface, but for Cosby, the timing couldn't be worst, given his recent "crusade"of criticizing bad personal choices made by poor blacks. Odd thing though, the predictable conspiracy theories are going both ways. Some African-Americans are pointing the usual finger at so-called racist white society.
